Customizing the Traxxas Factory Five Hot Rods
Taking a Hot Rodder's Approach to the 4-Tec 3.0
Since its early origins in the 1940s and 50s, hot rodding has been about customization and performance. The Traxxas Factory Five Hot Rods embrace this philosophy right out of the box, featuring custom fade paint jobs and flame graphics combined with the precision handling and speed of the 4-Tec 3.0 chassis.

We decided to get into the spirit of hot rodding ourselves with these three customized versions of our own. Adding a clear body and some ProGraphix paint, along with a new set of wheels and tires can totally transform the Factory Fives to your style.
Let's take a closer look at these custom creations.
Flamed 33 Coupe
The Factory Five 33 coupe features a heavily chopped profile and laid back grille to create a truly unique look. We went a step further and used Traxxas body scissors and hobby knife to trim the fenders and running boards off for an open wheel look.
Custom flames were masked and painted, and we tried two different sets of wheels for unique looks. The original Salt Flats wheels keep the car looking more traditional, while a set of Corvette wheels give it a more modern street rod attitude.
Rat Rod 35 Pickup
We’ve shown the process of adding scale detailing and weathering previously on the Apocalypse-ready TRX-4 Sport, and a hot rod truck is the perfect opportunity to put those skills to work. Looking like a fresh barn find, the truck was treated to coats of red and silver, with salt and other materials used on the inside to create the breaks in color. On the outside, the look is completed using the ProGraphix matte finishing spray.
To keep this one looking traditional, the stock Salt Flats wheels are utilized. For even more rat rod appeal, you can apply weathering to the wheels as well.
Blackout 35 Pickup
Our final custom creation is certainly the most low-key look of the three. The pickup features a clear body finished in metallic black, along with blacked-out accessories and a few hits of fluorescent yellow to liven things up. The clear windows are sprayed with Pro Scale tint, and a set of wheels and tires from the Supra complete the sinister look.
The Supra’s wide front tires and ultra-soft compound add a new level of performance and control on the pavement, making this more than just an aesthetic upgrade.
The Factory Five's factory-installed LEDs let you drive into the evening, and they make for great photo opportunities. Be sure to transfer them over or order a fresh set when you get your clear body.
